Front vs Back
Put durable Defender heroes in the front row and damage-focused heroes behind them. Support heroes should be positioned according to the squad and battle type.
Build squads around clear roles: durable front line, damage behind it, and a coherent hero type strategy.

For most developing accounts, concentrate hero levels, stars, skills and gear on one main squad before trying to make three squads equally strong.
General community guidance prioritizes the main Tactic skill for Defenders and Attackers. Attackers then value their attack skill; Support priorities vary by hero, so check the hero’s role before spending medals.
The favored vehicle type takes about 20% less damage from the type it counters. Think of this as a matchup advantage, not an automatic win: hero stars, skills, Exclusive Weapons, gear, drone, research, tactics and march size can overcome a counter when the development gap is large.
Counter: Missile. Countered by: Aircraft.
Tank squads are a common early/main formation because strong Tank heroes are accessible and the class offers a balanced mix of durable defenders, high Energy damage and support. A developed Tank squad is excellent into Missile formations, but Aircraft receives the counter advantage into Tank.
Typical full UR structure: Murphy + Williams in front; Kimberly + Stetmann + Marshall in back.
Use Tank when: scouting shows a Missile-heavy enemy, your Tank roster is substantially better developed, or you need your strongest established all-purpose squad.
Counter: Tank. Countered by: Missile.
Aircraft is the natural answer to Tank-heavy opponents. Aircraft formations combine defensive frontliners with dangerous back-row Energy damage and control. They become especially valuable when many opponents on your server rely on five-Tank mains.
Typical full UR structure: Carlie + Lucius in front; DVA + Schuyler + Morrison in back.
Use Aircraft when: the target's main formation is Tank and your Aircraft heroes are developed enough to capitalize on the counter. Be cautious when scouting a strong Missile formation.
Counter: Aircraft. Countered by: Tank.
Missile is the deliberate answer to Aircraft. The class can combine Energy and Physical damage, target pressure and counter/defensive mechanics, making it valuable as Aircraft becomes more common.
Typical full UR structure: Adam + McGregor in front; Tesla + Fiona + Swift in back.
Use Missile when: scouting shows Aircraft, especially when you have invested enough in the Missile frontline to survive long enough for Tesla, Fiona and Swift to deliver their damage.
After the Troop Type Counter/formation feature is available, matching hero vehicle types adds HP, Attack and Defense to the squad.
| Composition | Bonus |
|---|---|
| 3 same type | +5% |
| 3 same + 2 another type | +10% |
| 4 same type | +15% |
| 5 same type | +20% |
A five-of-one-type formation gets the largest raw formation bonus. A hybrid can still be useful when a specific hero or counter solution provides more value than the lost bonus.
Front row: normally two Defense heroes. Their job is to survive long enough for your damage heroes to cast repeatedly.
Back row: normally your Attack heroes plus Support. Protect the main carry instead of placing it in front just because it has high power.
If a squad keeps losing, read the battle report: identify which defender dies first, whether your main DPS gets another skill cast, and whether the enemy is exploiting your vehicle-type weakness.
Tank enemy → Aircraft is favored. Aircraft enemy → Missile is favored. Missile enemy → Tank is favored.
Do not dismantle a highly developed main squad merely to force the counter. A weaker counter squad can still lose to superior heroes, gear, skills, tech and drone. Use the counter triangle as one part of the decision: compare the enemy type, your available squad development and what the battle report says is actually failing.
Maximize the heroes you actually field. Move your best gear and scarce upgrade materials to Squad 1 first, then strengthen the second squad once the first reaches meaningful milestones.
Avoid evenly distributing UR shards, skill medals and top gear across every hero. A focused first squad is generally more useful than several mediocre squads.
